In 2004, 11.9 percent of all U.S. households
were "food insecure" because of lack of resources
In 2004
over 13.8 million, or 19.0%, of American children resided in food
insecure households, meaning they were hungry or at risk of
hunger.
Over 2.5 million elderly persons are served by the
America’s Second Harvest Network each year. 53.9 percent of client
households with at least one member age 65 or over are food
insecure, an estimated 1.09 million households.
Among the
members receiving food assistance (from the Second Harvest
Network), 68% have incomes below the official federal poverty
level
